Tapping Inserts for Plastic

To handle greater pull force than press-fit inserts, these tapping inserts have external threads that bite into your material. They’re also known as Trisert inserts. More durable than threads cut directly in plastic, they’re used to add strong and reusable metal threads into plastic surfaces. Thread these inserts onto a bolt with two nuts and drive into a drilled hole using a wrench. Or, to save time, use an installation tool (sold separately) with your ratchet wrench or in your drill press. The flutes on these inserts guide loose chips up and out of the way, keeping threads clean.

Brass inserts have good corrosion resistance. They’re also electrically conductive.

18-8 stainless steel inserts are stronger than brass inserts. They have excellent corrosion resistance, so they stand up to mild chemicals and water. Free from lead, you can safely recycle them.

Also known as Tap-Lok inserts, these inserts cut their own threads in soft metals such as aluminum, so there’s no need to tap the hole. Their cutting teeth lock them into your material, so they won’t budge when you install or remove a screw. Thread the insert onto a bolt with two nuts before driving it into a drilled hole with a wrench. For repeated installation, use an installation tool with a ratchet wrench or insert the installation tool into a drill press. These inserts have a zinc plating, so they resist corrosion in wet environments.

Inserts with thin walls are often used in small holes or near the edge of a workpiece.

Inserts with thick walls are used to add threads to large holes. They’re often used to replace threads that have been drilled out.
