Carbide Inserts for Multiple Materials
Choose these premium turning carbide inserts to cut a variety of materials without changing out your tool. For optimized performance, choose a premium insert designed for your workpiece material. These inserts are made of superior carbide for longer life and a smoother finish on your workpiece than economy inserts. Install inserts into a matching holder.
Inserts with a larger nose angle and tip radius remove more material with each pass but cut less precisely than smaller inserts. Select the insert with the largest nose angle and tip radius that will turn your workpiece to the desired shape.
Negative-rake inserts are the first choice for most turning applications. With strong cutting edges on two faces, they last longer than comparable positive-rake inserts. When all the edges on one face are worn, flip the insert over.
Positive-rake inserts stick out in front of the holder to reach tight spaces on the workpiece. However, they only have cutting edges on one side.
After choosing nose angle and rake type, consider roughing inserts for removing material quickly when surface finish isn’t a concern. Medium inserts remove a moderate amount of material for a semi-smooth surface finish. Use finishing inserts at the end of your turning process to remove minimal material for a smooth surface finish.
Inserts for semi-interrupted cutting conditions are the most commonly used, often to machine imperfectly round workpieces, such as shafts with a keyway. Inserts for interrupted cutting conditions are best for workpieces that will come in and out of contact with the insert, such as hexagonal bars.

Economy Carbide Inserts
Install these carbide inserts into a matching holder. When a cutting edge becomes dull, rotate the insert in the holder to use a sharp edge. Larger nose angles and larger tip radii provide a stronger cutting edge but result in increased vibration and a rougher finish.
Positive-rake inserts have an edge that is less than 90° to sit flat in the holder for improved cutting clearance and a better finish than negative-rake inserts. They have cutting edges on one side.
Negative-rake inserts have a 90° edge and sit at an angle in the holder to provide a strong cutting force for heavy duty applications. They have cutting edges on both sides for twice the life of comparable positive-rake inserts.
Coated inserts last longer and can be run at faster speeds than uncoated inserts.

Carbide Inserts for Stainless Steel
Heat resistant and shaped for turning stainless steel specifically, they’ll last longer than inserts for multiple materials.

Carbide Inserts for Non-Ferrous Materials
Cut aluminum, copper, brass, and other non-ferrous materials with these premium inserts. Made of uncoated carbide with chipbreakers designed to turn soft, sticky metal, they’ll last longer than premium general use inserts. These inserts have a positive rake, meaning they stick out in front of the holder to reach tight spaces on the workpiece. However, they won't last as long as negative rake inserts because they only have cutting edges on one side. Designed for medium cutting in semi-interrupted conditions, they’re commonly used to leave a moderately smooth finish on imperfectly round workpieces, such as shafts with a keyway. Install inserts into a matching holder.
Inserts with a larger nose angle and tip radius remove more material with each pass but cut less precisely than smaller inserts. Select the insert with the largest nose angle and tip radius that will turn your workpiece to the desired shape.

Carbide Inserts for Cast Iron
Made of an abrasion-resistant carbide designed for turning cast iron, these inserts will last longer than inserts for multiple materials. Install inserts into a matching holder.

Cubic Boron Nitride Inserts
Resisting wear and fractures when cutting hardened steel, these cubic boron nitride inserts last longer than carbide inserts. Use them for high-speed finishing and interrupted cutting applications. All have multiple cutting edges, so when an edge dulls, rotate the insert in your holder to use a sharp edge. Those with larger nose angles and tip radii have stronger cutting edges, but create more vibration and a rougher finish.
Positive-rake inserts have an edge that is less than 90° to sit flat in the holder for improved cutting clearance and a better finish than negative-rake inserts. They have cutting edges on one side of the inserts.

Alumina Ceramic Inserts
These inserts are made with a black alumina ceramic on the cutting edges. Compared to carbide inserts, ceramic lasts longer in hardened-steel tooling applications because it is chemically inert and has better heat resistance. Ceramic inserts have comparable wear resistance to cubic boron nitride, but ceramic is best for continuous and light cutting while cubic boron nitride can also be used in heavy interruption. These inserts have multiple cutting edges, so when a cutting edge becomes dull, rotate the insert in the holder to use a sharp edge. Larger nose angles and larger tip radii provide a stronger cutting edge but result in increased vibration and a rougher finish.
Positive-rake inserts have an edge that is less than 90° to sit flat in the holder for improved cutting clearance and a better finish than negative-rake inserts. They have cutting edges on one side of the inserts.
Negative-rake inserts have a 90° edge and sit at an angle in the holder to provide a strong cutting force for heavy duty applications. They have cutting edges on both sides of the inserts for twice the life of comparable positive-rake inserts.
