    Taps

Image of Product. Front orientation. Taps. Taps.
Cut threads into holes so screws, bolts, and rods fit snugly. Our basic taps have straight flutes that are good for most jobs.
Cobalt Steel—These taps resist higher temperatures and and last twice as long as high-speed steel taps. They thread hard materials such as iron and hardened steel without damaging their cutting edges.
Carbide—The hardest and most wear-resistant taps. They last 10 times longer than high-speed steel for the best performance on hard and abrasive materials like nickel and fiberglass. Carbide can be brittle, however, so these taps require a rigid machine tool holder to prevent breakage and should not be used for hand tapping.
Uncoated—The economical choice, these won't last as long as coated taps.
Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated—Run at higher speeds and last twice as long as uncoated taps.
Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN) Coated—No taps last longer. These are the best for high-speed, high-temperature drilling of tough materials such as iron and titanium.
Plug Chamfer—These taps thread through holes and blind holes. The tapered section is shorter than a taper chamfer and longer than bottoming chamfer. As a result, they're easier to turn than bottoming taps but require more force than taper taps.
Bottoming Chamfer—Cut all the way to the bottom of blind holes with taps that have the shortest taper. Since these require the most force to turn, they’re often used to finish holes started by taper- or plug-chamfer taps.
Number of Flutes—Taps with fewer flutes have more space to capture chips, so you won’t have to clear them as often. However, they can be more difficult to keep straight in the hole.

    Chip-Clearing Tap Sets

A range of sizes that remove chips so they don’t ruin the threads or jam the tap. The spiral-point flutes force chips through the hole to prevent buildup and form threads faster than standard taps. Also known as gun taps.

The most versatile taps resist heat and wear to stay sharp. They’re good for most metals and plastic.
Uncoated—The economical choice, these won't last as long as coated taps.
Gold Oxide—The finish increases wear resistance and reduces friction to improve chip flow, so these taps can last 50% longer than uncoated taps.
Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated—Run at higher speeds and last twice as long as uncoated taps.

    Chip-Clearing Pipe and Conduit Taps

With widely spaced flutes, chips fall away from the tap and plenty of lubricant flows to the workpiece. These taps prevent buildup that can ruin threads and keep pipe and conduit from making strong connections. Also known as interrupted-thread taps.

    Coil Thread Taps

Image of Product. Front orientation. Taps. Coil Thread Taps.
Produce wide, shallow threads that permit quick assembly and disassembly and won’t trap dirt and debris. Coil-threaded fasteners are commonly used in concrete forming equipment because material won't get stuck in the threads.
High-Speed Steel—These taps resist heat and wear to stay sharp.
Black Oxide—The dark finish increases wear resistance and reduces friction to improve chip flow, so these taps can last 50% longer than uncoated taps.

Chip-Clearing Tap and Drill Bit Sets for Through Holes

Image of Product. Front orientation. Tap and Drill Bit Sets. Chip-Clearing Tap and Drill Bit Sets for Through Holes.
Also known as gun taps, the taps in these sets have spiral-point flutes that push chips ahead of the tap and out of through holes. Because they don't need to be reversed to prevent buildup, they produce threads more efficiently than standard taps and are suitable for production work. Taps have a square shank for compatibility with tap wrenches and tap holders for drill presses and milling machines. With a plug chamfer, they have 3-5 chamfered cutting threads, so they're suitable for start-to-finish tapping. All taps and drill bits are made of high-speed steel for use on most metal and plastic.

    Thread Mills

Cut a range of thread sizes with a single tool. These thread mills can also produce both right-hand and left-hand threads. All are made of solid carbide with an aluminum-titanium-nitride (AlTiN) coating, so they have high strength and excellent wear resistance, even when cutting hard and abrasive material. Use them in a CNC machine that allows helical interpolation.
When used for internal threading, thread mills can create threads of any size equal to or greater than the minimum size listed. They leave space in the hole for chips to fall, and a broken thread mill can fall into the hole without damaging the workpiece.

Thread mills cut internal UNC, UNEF, UNF, UNJ, or UNS threads, but the threads they create have a fixed pitch.
