Now, plumbers often use them to grip sensitive plumbing fixtures and fittings that can be marred by regular pliers. The handles have plastic grips for comfort.

Nonmarring Parallel-Jaw Pliers
For a strong grip that won’t damage your workpiece, these pliers have a parallel-jaw design with nonmarring surfaces. By clamping in parallel, the jaws make more contact with a workpiece than standard pliers and keep irregularly shaped objects from slipping forward when pressure is applied. It also means there’s less chance the jaws will nick your workpiece as they clamp down.
Pliers with a knob jaw adjustment can be set to hold their opening size.
Steel pliers have a standard nose, so they're commonly known as needle-nose and chain-nose pliers. Stainless steel pliers have a wide nose for a better grip on your work. They're also known as flat-nose and duckbill pliers.
