When precision measurements are required for quality control or by regulation, use a tape measure that includes a calibration certificate traceable to NIST. The certificate states that the tape measure has passed a test for accuracy, so you can be confident your measurements are correct and consistent.
Coated Steel Blade—A coating prevents the graduations from wearing or scratching off. Made of steel, these blades stay stiff when extended and won't stretch if pulled too hard, so they maintain their accuracy over time. They also keep their shape if dragged over rough surfaces, such as concrete.
Vinyl-Coated Metal Case—Choose metal cases for your toughest industrial jobs, from construction to machining. These cases resist breaking due to hard hits and drops. However, they're heavier to carry around than plastic cases.

Fiberglass Blade—These blades bend without breaking, so they're best for measuring curved surfaces, such as silos. The choice for outdoor jobs, they won't rust from water. They also won't conduct electricity when working near conduit and powerlines.

A favorite among surveyors, these tape measures have a large, rubber-coated handle for a comfortable grip when trekking long distances. Choose them for outdoor and dirty jobs—an open case lets dirt, sand, and other debris fall away, so they won’t clog up the reel. Their blade extends 50 ft. or farther, long enough to measure a semi-trailer.

Also known as oil-gauging tapes, use these tape measures to check the level of oil and other fluids in deep, large containers such as tanks and vats.

Liquid in tank tape measures have a cylindrical plumb bob that sinks to the bottom of the tank. The blade indicates the distance to the surface of the liquid.
Black Steel—Black steel blades are for measuring clear liquids. They have wear-resistant etched markings.
Stainless Steel—Stainless steel blades are corrosion-resistant. Use them in clear and dark liquids. They have wear-resistant etched markings.
Rubber Blade Wiper—Strip excess liquid off of a blade as it is reeled in. These wipers fit all Liquid-Level Tape Measures.

    Measures Liquid Removed from Tank
Image of Specification. Front orientation. ZoomedIn view. Contains Annotated, MultipleImages. Liquid-Level Tape Measures. Measures Liquid Removed from Tank.
Liquid removed from tank tape measures have a rectangular plumb bob. To find the amount of liquid removed from a tank, lower the plumb bob until it makes contact with the liquid’s surface, then add the measurement from the plumb bob to the measurement from the blade. To determine the amount of liquid in the tank, subtract the liquid removed from tank measurement from the overall tank height.
Black Steel—Black steel blades are for measuring clear liquids. They have wear-resistant etched markings.
Stainless Steel—Stainless steel blades are corrosion-resistant. Use them in clear and dark liquids. They have wear-resistant etched markings.
Plumb Bobs—Use as a weight on the end of your blade.
