Coating-Thickness Gauge Inspection Kits

With three included probes, the gauge in these kits goes beyond a typical check for coating thickness. It also measures surface profile and environmental conditions, such as temperature. Kits include everything you need for thorough tests whether you’re inspecting a surface that’s painted, powdered, or plated. Just swap out probes to measure what you need. Use the plate and shims to practice measurements and ensure the probe is working properly. The glass plate and metal shims work with the surface profile probe. The plastic shims work with the coating thickness probe. Easy to use, the gauge’s touch screen guides you through measurements step-by-step.
Switch between scan modes for full control over how you measure, from single-point tests to continuous readings. You can even find stats and create presets for repeated measurements. For long-term tracking, the gauge stores up to 250,000 results from multiple probes in up to 1,000 batches. See trends in real time with live graphing. To help you comply with ISO, ASTM, SSPC-PA, and IMO coating standards, set criteria for go/no-go tests.
Thanks to a compatible app, you can add notes and images to readings or make reports on the go. For exporting into programs such as Excel or making multimedia reports in templates, use the included software.
Choose kits based on coating and surface types. Kits with probes for both nonconductive and nonmagnetic coatings include a thickness probe that automatically identifies the coating and surface material. Kits with probes for 0-250 mil coating thickness are ideal for testing epoxies, flame-retardant finishes, and other thick coatings.
A built-in probe lets you use the gauge one-handed—no extended probe to maneuver. A detachable probe means you can measure underwater and up to 3 ft. away. The waterproof probes are at the end of sealed cable, so you can reach surfaces without submerging the gauge.

Scratch-Resistance Testers

Determine the relative hardness of resins, film, lacquer, and paint by testing their resistance to scratches by graphite pencils. The pencils are calibrated to specific lead grades for hardness. The lowest hardness value of the pencil that mars the material is the material’s relative hardness. Flatten the tip of the pencil lead with the included 400 grit sandpaper, then insert the pencil into the tester. As you push the tester over your material, the pencil is dragged across the surface at a constant pressure. These testers are often used in the development of synthetic resins. They meet ASTM D3363 for testing the hardness of coatings.

Ultrasonic Painted-Surface Thickness Gauges
Measure the thickness of painted metal without removing the coating. The ultrasonic probe provides highly accurate readings. This gauge comes with a calibration certificate traceable to NIST that states it has passed a test for accuracy. It also includes a USB cord for connecting to your PC. Use the included ultrasonic gel for maximum surface contact.
Use calibration blocks to calibrate your thickness gauge. All blocks have a serial number and come with a calibration certificate traceable to NIST.
Grind Size Gauges
Test how smoothly your paint, coatings, slurries, and other mixtures are blended. These gauges check for coarse particles and how they clump together, otherwise known as grind, which affect texture and application. With both a micron and Hegman scale, there’s no need for conversions. Gauges have two identical grooves to test samples side by side. Made of 440C stainless steel, they have excellent wear and abrasion resistance for repeated use with a wide variety of materials. They also resist corrosion.
Place your sample in the deep end of the groove and draw it evenly towards the shallow end with the scraper. To identify the sample’s rating, check where particles clump together on the scale.
Choose a broad scale range for thick samples, such as ceramic slurries. Choose a narrow scale range for extra precision with thin samples, such as printing ink. The broader the range, the more gradual the groove depth.
Microns (µm) are one millionth of a meter. A Hegman scale, also known as a National Standard scale, ranges from 8 to 0. The finer the grind, the lower the micron value, and the higher the Hegman value.

Viscosity Testers

Also known as Zahn cups, these testers let you calculate viscosity based on the speed at which a liquid drains through a cup with a hole at the bottom. To determine viscosity, dip the cup in a liquid until it is completely filled, lift the cup out of the liquid, and time how many seconds it takes for the liquid to drain out of the hole in the bottom. Use the included formula to convert seconds to centipoise. Testers cannot be sold to Canada due to import regulations.
Rotational Viscosity Meters

To help ensure batch quality and consistency, these meters use the resistance met by their rotating spindle to measure the viscosity of liquid samples more quickly than manual testers. Results show immediately on a digital display. They also display torque percentage, which is often used by labs. If the torque percentage is outside the ideal range (10%-90%), switch to a different size spindle to improve accuracy. These meters come with multiple spindles to accommodate a wide range of viscosities. Spindles attach to meters magnetically, so you can add them with one hand and there’s little risk of bending them. They cannot be sold to the regions listed due to import regulations.
These meters require no external programming—switch between samples by making adjustments on the display. Results are not saved, so plug meters into a printer to create a record.
Use these meters with standard 600 ml beakers.
1 cP-6,000,000 cP meters work with low-viscosity fluids with a viscosity similar to juice, ink, and mouthwash. Add spindle guards to prevent measurement errors caused by waves and ripples.
60 cP-320,000,000 cP meters test high-viscosity fluids that are similarly viscous to mayonnaise, peanut butter, and hair gels.
Add temperature probes to account for the impact of temperature on viscosity.
