Selecting Compatible Lead Screws and Nuts
More
Ultra-Precision Lead Screws and Nuts

Operating with less backlash (play) than Precision Acme Lead Screws and Nuts, these provide increased nut life and more reliable movement in automated systems. Also known as single-start and self-locking lead screws and nuts, they have a single thread that runs the length of the screw. The nut travels only when the screw turns, so your system won’t unexpectedly move when the lead screw is at rest. All components are corrosion resistant for use in harsh environments. To ensure compatibility, select components that have the same thread type, thread size, and number of thread starts.
Travel distance per turn, also known as screw lead, is the distance a nut moves with one revolution of the lead screw.

Acme Lead Screws and Nuts

Found in hand-powered clamps, vises, grates, doors, and work tables, lead screws and nuts have broad, square threads that are well suited for quick assembly, high clamping forces, and lifting and lowering heavy objects. To ensure compatibility, please select components that have the same thread direction, thread size, and number of thread starts.
Carbon steel components are easier to machine than alloy steel components. Zinc-plated carbon steel components have mild corrosion resistance. Alloy steel components are harder and stronger than carbon steel components. 18-8 stainless steel components have good corrosion resistance. 316 stainless steel components have excellent corrosion resistance.
Travel distance per turn, also known as screw lead, is the distance a nut or handle moves with one revolution of the lead screw.

Ball Screws and Nuts

Internal ball bearings provide smooth low-friction travel in applications that require high speeds, accurate positioning, and repeatable movement. Also known as single-start ball screws and nuts, they have a single thread that runs the length of the screw. They operate with more torque than fast-travel ball screws and nuts. To ensure compatibility, select components that have the same thread direction and size. Ball nuts are furnished with a tube to keep ball bearings in place. Do not remove the tube until you are ready to install the nuts onto the screws.
Travel distance per turn, also known as screw lead, is the distance a ball nut moves with one revolution of the ball screw.

Root diameter indicates the diameter the ball screw will be after machining away the threads.

Fast-Travel Ball Screws and Nuts

Multiple thread channels (also known as thread starts) create faster linear travel than ball screws with a single thread start. Internal ball bearings provide smooth low-friction travel in applications that require high speeds, accurate positioning, and repeatable movement. To ensure compatibility, select components that have the same thread size and number of thread starts. Ball nuts are furnished with a tube to keep ball bearings in place. Do not remove the tube until you are ready to install the nuts onto the screws.

Root diameter indicates the diameter the ball screw will be after machining away the threads.

Self-Stopping Ball Screws and Nuts

Keep your ball screw spinning without the ball nut damaging your system—a clutch-like collar inside the ball nut prevents it from travelling past the stop pins. Install the included stop pins anywhere along the length of the ball screw by drilling a hole in the valley of the threads (also known as the root) and pressing in the stop pin. When the collar meets the stop pin, the ball nut disengages from the threads and begins to idle. To start the ball nut travelling again, spin the ball screw in the opposite direction. All components are black-oxide steel and have mild corrosion resistance. To ensure compatibility, select components that have the same thread size. Ball nuts are furnished with a tube to keep ball bearings in place. Do not remove the tube until you are ready to install the nuts onto the screws.

Corrosion-Resistant Ball Screws and Nuts

Suitable for use in harsh environments, these ball screws and nuts are made of stainless steel. Internal ball bearings provide smooth low-friction travel in applications that require high speeds, accurate positioning, and repeatable movement. Also known as single-start ball screws and nuts, they have a single thread that runs the length of the screw. They operate with more torque than fast-travel ball screws and nuts. To ensure compatibility, select components that have the same thread size. Ball nuts are furnished with a tube to keep ball bearings in place. Do not remove the tube until you are ready to install the nuts onto the screws.

Fast-Travel Corrosion-Resistant Ball Screws and Nuts

Multiple thread channels (also known as thread starts) create faster linear travel than ball screws with a single thread start.
