Surface-Finish Scales

Compare your surface finish to one of the swatches on these scales. The finishes are expressed in microinches (µ").
30-swatch scale comes with a chart to correlate the finishes with CLA and ISO N scales.
Economy Surface-Finish Scales

Compare your surface finish to one of the swatches on this scale. The finishes are expressed in microinches (µ").
No. of Swatches | Scale | For Surface Type | Surface Finish Range, microinch | Lg. | Wd. | Material | Each

Surface-Finish Scales with Certificate of Calibration

This scale comes with a calibration certificate traceable to NIST that states it has passed a test for accuracy. Compare your surface finish to one of the swatches on the scale. The finishes are expressed in microinches (µ").
No. of Swatches | Scale | For Surface Type | Surface Finish Range, microinch | Lg. | Wd. | Material | Each
22 | Ra | Ground, Lapped, Milled, Profiled, Turned | 2-500 | 2" | 5 3/8" | Nickel Alloy | 0000000 | 0000000 |
Surface-Roughness Testers
These units test for the most popular parameters, such as Ra, Rp, and Rq. You can also set an upper and lower limit for go/no-go readings, or test for a specific standard, such as ANSI, ISO, JIS, or VDA. Tester can save up to 10 readings and can take 1,000 readings on a single charge. It has an RS-232C port for a direct connection to your PC.
Use the SPC data output cable (sold separately) to connect your tester to a Mitutoyo miniprocessor.

Gloss Meters

Confirm that each product is as shiny as the last. These meters measure the gloss of paint and coatings as well as metal, ceramic, and granite surfaces. All come with a USB cord to transfer data to PCs.
Meters with a 60° field of view can evaluate the gloss of most standard, semi-gloss surfaces.
Meters with a 20°, 60°, and 85° field of view can evaluate low-gloss/matte and high-gloss surfaces in addition to semi-gloss surfaces—their gloss measuring range is 10 times as broad as meters with only a 60° field of view. They’re compatible with a free app that lets you use your Android device to start and stop recording and send data using Bluetooth.
These meters come with a calibration block, and you should calibrate them before each reading. Lay the block on a flat surface and press the calibration button on your meter. Position the meter on top of the block, and your meter will calibrate.

Vertical Benchtop Optical Comparators
By projecting a magnified shadow or image of your part onto a screen, these optical comparators give you an easy way to measure and inspect its precise features. They work similarly to overhead projectors, but with fixed magnification to preserve proportions. Because of how easy they are to set up and use, they’re a staple in most machine shops. They shine light from above, so they’re best for inspecting flat parts, such as gaskets and O-rings. Unlike traditional optical comparators, these comparators are compact to fit easily on a benchtop.
To use these comparators, choose profile or surface lighting. Profile lighting creates a shadow of your part, which you can use to plot points for precise measurements. To plot each point, move the stage the part rests on until the point lines up with the crosshair on the projector screen. For precision, the stage moves in increments thinner than a sheet of paper. Surface lighting makes these comparators work like an illuminated magnifier, blanketing the part with even light to reveal scratches, dents, and other surface flaws.
Save the measurements you’ve gathered for later by exporting the data as a text file using an RS-232 cord (not included).
Optical comparators with edge detection increase accuracy and efficiency by reducing human error. No need to identify each edge yourself with the crosshair—these comparators register whether they are passing over your object's shadow or a gap, such as a hole or cutout. The graphic display screen shows a visual representation of the part you’re measuring, making it easy to identify and measure specific features. To make sure each part is inspected the same way, create a program that guides anyone using the comparator on what steps to follow.
Holders, swivel center supports, and V-blocks securely hold your part as you measure. V-blocks hold round parts.
If you need to inspect your part from different angles, use either a swivel center support or a rotary table. Swivel center supports turn around a horizontal axis, moving your part in a circle like a Ferris wheel. Rotary tables spin around a vertical axis, rotating your part just like a carousel.
Scales and charts are clear, so you can lay them on top of your comparator’s projector screen. Scales give you a way to check your comparator’s magnification and length measurements. Charts are for checking angle measurements.
Filters are blue to increase contrast and reduce glare on your comparator’s projector screen.

Horizontal Benchtop Optical Comparators
Measure and inspect precise features by projecting a magnified shadow or image of your part onto a screen. These optical comparators work similarly to overhead projectors, but with fixed magnification to preserve proportions. Because of how easy they are to set up and use, they’re a staple in most machine shops. From o-rings to castings, they work to inspect parts with simple or complex geometries. They shine light from the side, so unlike vertical comparators, your part can be held from underneath for stability. Unlike traditional optical comparators, these comparators are compact to fit easily on a benchtop.
To use these comparators, choose profile or surface lighting. Profile lighting creates a shadow of your part, which you can use to plot points for precise measurements. To plot each point, move the stage the parts rests on until the point lines up with the crosshair on the projector screen. For precision, the stage moves in increments thinner than a sheet of paper. Surface lighting makes these comparators work like an illuminated magnifier, blanketing the part with even light to reveal scratches, dents, and other surface flaws.
These comparators come with a variety of features to streamline your inspection process. For a quick way to compare manufactured parts to designs, set desired dimension and tolerance limits. You can also create a program that guides anyone using the comparator on what steps to follow, so each part is inspected the same way. To save everything for later, print the data or export it as a spreadsheet or text file to a computer with a USB or RS-232 connection.
Changing the magnification is as easy as twisting the current lens until it pops out and twisting in a new lens (sold separately).
Optical comparators with edge detection increase accuracy and efficiency by reducing human error. No need to identify each edge yourself with the crosshair—these comparators register whether they are passing over your object's shadow or a gap, such as a hole or cutout.
Rotary vises (sold separately) give you a secure way to hold up and rotate objects.
Cabinets (sold separately) can serve as a stand for your comparator and as storage for lenses and other accessories.
