Keep a variety of leaf thicknesses on hand to confirm gaps are within tolerance. These gauges are often used to check the clearance around bearings and other machine parts, making sure there’s enough space to avoid friction and prevent wear. The leaves are riveted together in a folding fan design, so they’re easy to carry. Each leaf is marked with thickness for quick reference.

Tapered leaves are often used for go/no-go checks. The end of each leaf is 0.002" thinner than its listed thickness. If the tip fits but the rest of the body doesn’t, your gap is within tolerance. Offset leaves are angled to access gaps that flat leaves can’t reach.

Steel and tool steel leaves are stronger, harder, and more wear resistant than stainless steel and brass leaves. Brass leaves have good corrosion resistance and are nonmarring to prevent scratches. They’re also nonmagnetic, so you can safely check spark plugs and other electronic ignitions without attracting debris. Stainless steel leaves are less likely to rust than steel and tool steel leaves.

Sets with both steel and brass leaves include 30 steel leaves and six brass leaves.

Sets with a leaf-securing lock hold individual leaves in place so they don’t move and disrupt measurements.

Tapered-Width Feeler Gauge Sets

Check slot widths and hole diameters with the markings on these gauges. Leaves in a variety of sizes are riveted together in a fan design—spread them out for use or fold them in for portability. Each leaf narrows toward the tip to measure a range of sizes. Slide them into a hole until the gauge sits snug and then read the width measurement.
