Vehicle Wire

Originally designed to meet the quality standards of the auto industry, this wire withstands high temperatures, flames, and abrasion. Unlike other low-voltage wires, this wire meets strict SAE performance requirements. You'll often hear it referred to as primary wire in trucks, trailers, forklifts, and other vehicles.
In protected environments, such as vehicle interiors, GPT wire is the best choice.
For wiring exposed to weather and wear and tear, choose a wire with polyethylene insulation. For these applications, GXL wire is the standard choice, as it balances flexibility and abrasion-resistance. TXL wire has a thinner insulation, making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces. SXL wire has a thicker insulation and is the most durable. It can withstand repeated exposure to heat, dust, chemicals, and salt.

Vehicle Wire Assortments

- Use for vehicles
- Flexible
- Temperature Range:
GPT Wire: -40° to 185° F
TXL and GXL Wire: -40° to 255° F
Keep spools of vehicle wire in multiple colors on hand. They meet SAE J1128 for low-voltage wiring in trucks, boats, trailers, and other vehicles.
GPT wire, or primary wire, has PVC insulation that makes it useful as a general purpose wire.
TXL and GXL wire have cross-linked polyethylene insulation that withstands higher temperatures and has more abrasion resistance than PVC insulation. TXL wire has thin walls, so it’s small and lightweight. It’s often used for dashboards and other car interior applications. GXL wire has thick walls, making it suitable for engine compartments.

Fusible Link Wire

- Use for vehicles
- Ultra Flexible
- Maximum Temperature: 300° F
Often found in older vehicles, this fusible link wire protects a circuit in applications where you can’t use a standard fuse. The conductor in the fusible link melts if there’s a short circuit or voltage spike, breaking the circuit to protect the rest of your wiring. Made of cross-linked polyethylene, the insulation withstands high temperatures and contains any sparks or flames caused by current overload. Since the conductor needs to be thin enough to melt before the rest of your wiring overheats, choose a fusible link wire that’s four gauge sizes smaller than your circuit. If you’re replacing a fusible link that has burned out, make sure the new wire is the same length and gauge as the old one.
