Heaters with thermostat turn on when your enclosure gets too cold. Adjustable thermostats let you set a custom temperature. Nonadjustable thermostats switch on at preset temperatures to prevent unwanted or accidental changes.

Heaters without built-in control require a separate thermostat, humidistat, timer, or switch to activate.

Radiant heaters warm the air around the heater—use them for localized heat near batteries and other parts that don’t work well in the cold. Open heaters take up less space than enclosed heaters, but they get hotter, so they need to be further from other parts. These heaters have a chimney shape to direct heat upward. Enclosed heaters have a plastic housing that makes them bigger than open heaters, but they don’t get as hot, so you can put them closer to other components. These heaters are double-insulated for shock protection.

Fan heaters blow hot air upward for even heat throughout an enclosure. They’re also double-insulated for shock protection.

Heaters that meet UL 94 V-0 self-extinguish within 10 seconds if they catch fire, and won’t spread the fire by dripping. An IP20 rating means fingers can’t accidentally touch the circuits inside and get shocked. An IP54 rating means heaters are protected against dust and water splashing in all directions.
