Containing more carbon than low-carbon steel—but less than 1095 spring steel—1050 spring steel is easily formed into parts such as washers, brackets, and springs before being hardened for use. It resists stress, so it won’t snap when formed or twisted. Because it has a lower carbon content than 1095 spring steel, it’s not as wear resistant.

Threaded Linear Motion Shafts
Mount these externally threaded shafts into tapped holes rather than using a shaft support, or attach a hex nut, shaft collar, or other threaded accessory. These shafts are smooth, hard, and wear resistant, so they work with linear bearings to reduce friction. Because of this, they're often used in manual and automated systems, such as those found in packing, machine tool, and material handling operations. All are turned, ground, and polished to tight diameter and straightness tolerances.
Steel shafts are generally stronger than aluminum and stainless steel shafts but not as corrosion resistant. Carbon steel shafts are good for general purpose use. The surface is hardened, so they stand up to repeated motion while keeping their center soft enough to absorb stress from shifting loads. Chamfered edges remove sharp corners at the end of these shafts, reducing damage to bearings, housings, and other components during installation.
Surface smoothness—The lower the microinch value, the smoother the finish and the less friction and wear it will cause on the bearing.
