Choosing a Socket Head Profile

  • standard socket head screw

Standard socket head screws have a head height that matches the screw's thread diameter. Good for high-strength fastening.

  • high profile socket head screw

High-profile socket head screws can be used in deep holes or hard-to-reach applications. Their head height is one and half times taller than a standard socket head.

  • low profile socket head screw

Low-profile socket head screws are used where head space is limited. Head height is about half the height of a standard socket head. Not recommended for high-strength fastening.

  • ultra low profile socket head screw

Ultra-low-profile screws can be used where head space is very limited. Head height is about one-third the height of a standard socket head. Not recommended for high-strength fastening.

Understanding Threading

  • Fully threaded screws engage with a tapped, threaded hole all the way to the head. Choose these when sideways force is not a concern.

  • Partially threaded screws have an unthreaded portion under the head for more holding power when force is applied from the side. The unthreaded portion is stronger than the threaded portion of a screw. Thread length may vary from the minimum thread length published to fully threaded.

Understanding Thread Size

Inch

Inch thread sizes are specified by diameter and threads per inch. Diameter is also known as screw size. For those with a diameter smaller than 1/4", screw size is indicated by a number (e.g., #10 or No.10).

Inch Equivalents for Numbered Screw Sizes
No.0 No.1 No.2 No.3 No.4 No.5 No.6 No.8 No.10 No.12
.060" .073" .086" .099" .112" .125" .138" .164" .190" .216"

Metric

Metric thread sizes are specified by diameter and pitch, which is the space between threads. For the size M6 × 1 mm, the pitch is coarse; while the size M6 × 0.75 mm has a fine pitch. If you don't know the pitch, choose coarse threads; they're the industry standard.
